1. Pastor’s thoughts

June was a very busy month. We started out with our Homecoming celebration on June 12th with special speaker, Dr. Jim Daniel; lots of special music and we awarded three awards: The Distinguished Service Award to Billy Douglass; the SDMI 2nd Mile Award to Bonnie Bratton; and the Legacy Award to Donna Jordon. This was all topped off with dinner on the grounds. Our men grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and we had all the trimmings to have a wonderful picnic type potluck. The very next day our District NMI convention started which was followed by the District SDMI convention and then the District Assembly led by General Superintendent Dr. Stan Toler. In the assembly Dr. Russell Branstetter overwhelmingly received a 4 year call to serve as our District Superintendent; 6 licensed ministers were ordained and lots of reports were given. And then on Saturday, the 18th, our ladies gave a wonderful Father’s Day breakfast to the men with special speaker Brother Paul Holderfield from Friendly Chapel Church of the Nazarene.

And we are starting out July with a big bang. The Hallelujah Harmony Quartet will be in concert with us on Sunday, July 3rd at 10:00 AM. You may remember that this is the quartet that has the bass singer who yodels. Immediately after the concert we will have a good old fashioned potluck lunch! (And it will be inside the building with the air conditioners running). Be sure and invite a friend to come and hear the group and tell them you are bringing extra food for them to stay as your guest and eat with us.

2. Something to think about

When the “storms of life” gather darkly ahead

I think of these wonderful words I once read

And I say to myself as “threatening clouds” hover

Don’t “fold up your wings” and “run for cover”

But like the eagle “spread wide your wings”

And “soar far above” the trouble life brings,

For the eagle knows that the higher he flies

The more tranquil and brighter become the skies…

And there is nothing in life God ever asks us to bear

That we can’t soar above “on the wings of prayer,”

And in looking back over the "storm you passed through"
You'll find you gained strength and new courage, too,
For in facing "life's storms" with an eagle's wings
You can fly far above earth's small, petty things.

3. A time to smile

After the revival had concluded, the three pastors were discussing the results with one another. The Methodist minister said, "The revival worked out great for us! We gained four new families." The Baptist preacher said, "We did better than that! We gained six new families." The Presbyterian pastor said, "Well, we did even better than that! We got rid of our 10 biggest trouble makers!"

Letters to the Pastor:

Dear Pastor, I would like to go to heaven someday because I know my brother won't be there. Stephen. Age 8, Chicago

Dear Pastor, Please say in your sermon that Peter Peterson has been a good boy all week. I am Peter Peterson. Sincerely, Pete. Age 9, Phoenix

Dear Pastor, My father should be a minister. Every day he gives us a sermon about something. Robert Anderson, age 11

Dear Pastor, I'm sorry I can't leave more money in the plate, but my father didn't give me a raise in my allowance. Could you have a sermon about a raise in my allowance? Love, Patty. Age 10, New Haven

Dear Pastor, My mother is very religious. She goes to play bingo at church every week even if she has a cold. Yours truly, Annette. Age 9, Albany

Dear Pastor, My father says I should learn the Ten Commandments. But I don't think I want to because we have enough rules already in my house. Joshua. Age 10, South Pasadena

Dear Pastor, Who does God pray to? Is there a God for God? Sincerely, Christopher. Age 9, Titusville

Dear Pastor, Are there any devils on earth? I think there may be one in my class. Carla. Age 10, Salina

Dear Pastor, I liked your sermon on Sunday. Especially, when it was finished. Ralph, Age 11, Akron

Dear Pastor, How does God know the good people from the bad people? Do you tell Him or does He read about it in the newspapers? Sincerely, Marie. Age 9, Lewiston

Same in my business:

A minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him in front of the service station. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump.

"Preacher," said the young man, "I'm sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip."

The minister chuckled, "I know what you mean. It's the same in my business."

God’s Book

Unfortunately many homes, yes even so-called Christian homes, are like the one in which the little girl pointed to the Bible on the mantle that was never opened, and said to her mother, "Whose book is that?"

Her mother quite startled by her daughters question replied, "Why honey, don't you know? That is God's book!"

The child demonstrating that she had a very practical turn to her mind said, "Don't you think that we had better give it back to him? No one around here ever reads it."
