1. Pastor’s thoughts:

Well, it seems that we always have some type of crisis each month.  I have been hearing a lot about the swine flu.  The vaccine is called H1N1.  Very impressive nomenclature, wouldn’t you say?  Here is some information on the H1N1 flu.

Overview:

Swine influenza is a flu virus usually found in pigs. The virus occasionally changes (mutates) and becomes infectious in humans. When this happens, the disease becomes a concern to humans, who have little or no immunity against it. This means the virus has the potential to spread quickly around the world. It also may be more difficult to treat than the usual, seasonal human flu viruses.

Symptoms of H1N1 flu infection in humans are similar to classic flu-like symptoms, which might include:

  • Fever above 100.4 °F
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Muscle aches
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

Human-to-human infection with the H1N1 flu virus likely occurs the same way as seasonal flu, when an infected person coughs or sneezes into air that others breathe in. People may also get infected by touching something with the virus on it, such as a door knob or counter, and then touching their mouth or nose.

You can find an updated case count of confirmed H1N1 flu infections in the U.S. at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) web site.

So it would appear that one of the best defenses against the H1N1 flu is constantly washing your hands and not touching your mouth or nose.  It would appear that this is a serious flu, so we should all take precautions.

My prayer is that you will remain free of this; but due the severity of it, go see your doctor if you have the symptoms listed above.

2. Laugh a little:

A grumbling man got to heaven with his wife, but even there he seemed dissatisfied.  “What’s the matter with you?” his wife asked.  “Here we are in Paradise.  Everything is perfect.  We’ve never had such delicious food.  Our mansion is beautiful.  The golf course is finer than any we’ve ever seen.  There are no dues, no taxes.  Our health is perfect.  I just can’t believe you’re not happy.  What is wrong?”  He explained, “If you hadn’t made me eat that miserable oat bran, we could have been here ten years ago.”

When I stopped to pick up Chris for pre-school, I saw an older woman hugging him as he left the house.  “Is that your grandmother?” I asked him.  “Yes,” Chris said.  “She’s come to visit us for Christmas.”  “How nice,” I said.  “Where does she live?”  “At the airport,” Chris replied.  “Whenever we want her, we just go to the airport and get her.”

A man bought a fifty-dollar vase for two dollars because the handles had been broken off.  He asked the salesperson to wrap it and send it to a friend, with the idea that the friend would think he had paid fifty dollars and that it was broken in the mailing. The friend wrote back, “Thank you for the lovely vase.  It was so nice of you to wrap each piece separately.”

3. Thought for the month:

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.
